A power outage stemming from a tree that knocked down a power line in east Tulsa on Saturday evening affected about 3,600 customers in Tulsa and Wagoner counties. Tony Hyer, manager of distribution systems for the Public Service Company of Oklahoma, said a customer’s tree fell through a power line. As crews made repairs a switch burnt up at the adjacent Lynn Lane substation, which caused a larger number of outages in east Tulsa and portions of Wagoner County. Around 6:30 p.m., about 1,800 outages were reported in each of the two counties. By 7:30 p.m. it was down to 591 in Tulsa County and 1,029 in Wagoner County, according to PSO’s online outage map. The outages were down to only 12 customers as of 9 p.m., which was when PSO had hoped to have power completely restored. Spokesman Ed Bettinger said the remaining 12 were on the east side of the Creek Turnpike. PSO determined a cable that runs under the turnpike went bad, he said, meaning electricity to those 12 customers “could be out for some time.” Crews were to begin repairs Saturday night and work until power is restored, Bettinger said. There wasn’t an immediate timeline for the fix. Hyer said crews were picking up customers a little at a time through the evening so as not to overload the circuit. He said they could bring more back up at a faster rate later in the evening as the strain on the grid lessened with fewer air conditioning units running in milder temperatures. Bettinger said the one tree caused all of the issues, which were exacerbated by a high load the grid was experiencing with air conditioners on during the day’s heat.
