VERNON TOWNSHIP — Some residents and businesses on the Route 322 corridor were without power for about two hours Wednesday night after a transformer exploded near the intersection of routes 322 and 98. Power was out from the traffic light near Kmart, all the way west past Wal-Mart, according to Vernon Central Hose Co. Fire Chief Ryan Neubert. Neubert said he was unsure why the transformer blew up, but by the time Vernon Central arrived at the transformer, a fire the explosion created had already burnt out. Vernon was called to the fire around 6:30 p.m., Neubert said, and power was restored around 8:30. Penelec restored the power, Neubert said, but he was unsure of the transformer’s condition. “I think they re-routed it (the area’s power) a different way,” he said. Neubert reported no injuries or motor vehicle accidents, saying Vernon Central and Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department directed traffic during the power outage. County emergency services reported a minor vehicle crash in the vicinity of the power outage on Route 98, but an emergency dispatcher wasn’t sure if it was related to the power outage. Attempts to reach Bill Jerin, Penelec regional manager, were unsuccessful.
