VALE—A power outage early Monday morning left between 2,200 to 2,300 residents without power and almost caused the schools in Vale to shut down for the day. Idaho Power said the outage was caused by an equipment failure at a substation and affected customers primarily in Vale, in addition to some in Harper and Ontario. The outage was reported 4:51 a.m. and crews repaired the equipment by 6:30 a.m. Vale School District Superintendent Matthew Hawley said busses were delayed about 30 minutes and due to communications challenges from the outage, school was momentarily canceled. Hawley said power was back on at 6:36 a.m. — right after the decision to close was made, causing officials to quickly recall bus drivers and let them know school was back on. Officials were able to communicate that school was not cancelled through social media, Hawley said.
