MATTOON (JG-TC) -- A power outage put 8,500 residents in the dark on Friday evening, and an Ameren Illinois representative says it was caused by a substation fire in Mattoon.
Media specialist Marcelyn Love said the fire was contained to the substation which caught fire at 7:20 p.m. Local firefighters and Ameren personnel immediately extinguished the fire.
Power was restored by 9:17 p.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
