(WAVY) — A local mall was one of almost 10,000 customers experiencing power outages in Hampton Roads Tuesday evening. The outages began as severe weather hit and severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect for Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach. At the time, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel was also closed due to high winds. WAVY Viewers reported an outage at Greenbrier Mall in Chesapeake around 8 p.m. until it closed. Janell Hancock with Virginia Dominion Power confirmed the outages were weather related. High winds caused tree limbs to fall on power lines, knocking out power in multiple locations. Hancock said crews have been working feverishly to get the power back on, but restoration times vary for each area. As of 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, Dominion Virginia Power’s website said 1,692 customers were without power in Southeastern Virginia. That number went down from just under 10,00 customers during the peak of outages around 9 p.m., Hancock said.
